I figure that I'm good to go so long as I got the installer downloaded. I wasn't willing to leave my power hungry computer on all day at work to try to get a small fractional part of a client I can't even use yet.

Good evening!
Shari here, noting my intention to *actually* return to active play in the release of this new game, FFXIV. I have followed this thread with interest, and will follow all y'all to the server you select to once again take up arms against... well anyone really.
I believe I will play the Galka-y fellow, signaling a shift from the cute and feminine Shari of old to the bulky and masculine Shari of new. And yes, I'm keeping the name. Don't front.

Hi thanks guys I really hope to see you all there. Yeah I downloaded the installer and it completed everything I think, it took like 8 hours or so, was very slow. But now I only need the service number thing to get it working.

I figured out why the download speed is so slow, they're running the update off of bittorrent, which is a MASSIVELY good thing as there's no servers to overwhelm when you do that. The downside is that you need to set up port forwarding on your router/firewall to forward UDP port 55296 to the computer you're downloading from for remote connections to establish. When I did that, my download speeds almost immediately jumped up to 300K from 5K.
Also, the Beta is supposed to start tonight at 1900, so maybe I'll see some of you online.
Edit: EVEN FASTER. Go to ~\My Documents\My Games\Final Fantasy XIV Beta Version\downloads\ffxiv-beta\ and under the sub dirs there there's a metadata directory that has the .torrents. USE YOUR OWN BITTORRENT CLIENT. You won't get to connect to the SE seeds but the peers you connect to will give you rediculous speeds in comparison.
The big one is 4.7 gigs (guessing the 1.3 gig file was the NON-open beta with only some areas) and it's named H2010.08.30.2000.torrent.
When you're done downloading it, I'm assuming you put it in the \patch directory under the same subdir you found the \metainfo directory in.

I lost track of hightale and cuervo =( I do still have some contact with Reaper, but he's not sure if he will join ffxiv, he says he don't have much time to play anymore.

If you have a Premium hotfile account here are links for d/l the two largest files for Final Fantasy 14 Beta. There are 7 parts total. With a premium account it took me 14 minutes to download all the files @ 40 Mbps down.
If you don't have a premium hotfile account, Phane's bittorrent method will probably be quicker.

I'm torrenting the big file now and my speeds SUCK. I'm a complete BitTorrent newbie though... any thoughts?
